Once upon a time, we rode the subway. Everyday, twice a day... sometimes more.
Growing up in what I like to call “deep Brooklyn”, my commute was often upwards of 45 minutes. And as a native(ish) New Yorker who used to believe in efficiency as a way of life, I refused to let this precious time go to waste.
Starting as an assignment in high school, (shoutout to Mr. Novetsky,) I began the practice of observing and drawing people on the subway, which I’ve kept up for about nearly 20 years. Gosh I feel old saying that out loud.
…Now, thanks to Covid and a quickly expanding family, I mostly get around in a car. Admittedly, I feel a little guilt about this—the environment being the disaster that it is and all—but hey, you try riding the subway with two dogs, a kid, and a handful of pens and tell me how it goes. (Just kidding, I highly do not recommend this. It’s hard enough with one dog, believe me, I have tried.)
I hope you enjoy perusing my “play time” as much as I enjoyed making it. And cheers to getting back to our “new normal” whenever and whatever that may be.
